Police are searching for a man wearing a Jack Daniels sweatshirt who helped himself to a donation jar earlier this month at a 7-Eleven on William Floyd Parkway in Shirley.

While the suspect might have thought he got away clean with the cash, Suffolk County police said he was caught in the act on store surveillance -- and now they're asking help in identifying the suspect.

The theft occurred on Nov. 10 at about 9:45 a.m., police said. Police said the suspect, who is seen with a newspaper under his arm, talking on a cellphone, took the jar from next to a counter top register, then fled south on Revilo Avenue in a black, late-model Nissan Altima.

It was not immediately clear how much cash was stolen.

Police are asking anyone with information call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.

All calls will remain confidential and callers are eligible for a cash reward of up to $5,000 for any information leading to an arrest in the case.
