A man was struck by lightning Monday night in Lake Ronkonkoma, police said, during a dangerous thunderstorm that moved through the area rapidly and dumped hail in some parts of Nassau and New York City.
Suffolk police said the lightning strike was on Decatur Lane in Lake Ronkonkoma at about 9:25 p.m. Nesconset Fire Department officials confirmed they brought the man to Stony Brook University Medical Center at 9:40 p.m. They could not immediately comment on his condition or the circumstances of the strike.
Lauren Sheprow, a spokeswoman for the hospital, declined to confirm whether a patient was brought there or the person's condition, citing state and federal privacy laws.
The storm brought intense lightning, thunder and hail in Nassau, Brooklyn and New Jersey, meteorologists said.
"In some areas it has fallen more than in others," said John Murray, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Upton.
The storm system was accompanied by downpours in parts of Long Island, New Jersey and New York City. "We had a few reports of flooding," in Brooklyn Murray said, adding that the thunderstorm had moved off shore, making way for occasional showers throughout Monday night into Wednesday morning.
