A man who jumped onto the westbound Long Island Expressway from an overpass Friday survived the leap, suffering a fractured femur and pelvis, police said.

The man, apparently attempting suicide, leaped from the Washington Avenue overpass in Brentwood at 10:52 a.m., landing in one of the westbound lanes of the LIE, a Suffolk County police spokeswoman said.

She could not say how far the man fell. He was not hit by any cars.

The westbound expressway was closed at Exit 55 and remained closed between that exit and Exit 53 for two hours, snarling traffic.

Suffolk County Sheriff's Office spokesman Chief Michael Sharkey said the victim, whose identity has not been released, was airlifted by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Police said his injuries were not life-threatening.
