Three masked men shot a Mastic Beach resident in the stomach and hand early Thursday after robbing his home, Suffolk police said.

The men went into a cottage in the backyard of a Monroe Drive house about 1:43 a.m., confronted a woman there and took "proceeds," police said.

As the robbers were leaving, a man who also lives in the cottage was walking toward the home. One of the masked men fired at him with a shotgun, police said.

The shooting victim was in stable condition Thursday afternoon at Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

Police declined to say what was stolen.
