Cops: Mattituck woman crashes into house, trees
A Mattituck woman drove through the bedroom of a house belonging to a 94-year-old woman after police said the driver's 2007 Lexus unexpectedly accelerated, causing her to lose control, according to Southold police.
Police said Noreen Warren, 63, was southbound on Grand Avenue 9:42 a.m. Saturday when her Lexus ES250 unexpectedly accelerated, police said. The car sideswiped a tree, struck and then plowed through the house of Judith Utter, who was at home, but was not hurt.
After leaving the house, the car then hit a second tree before coming to a stop.
Utter couldn't be reached for comment Sunday.
The damage to her house was so serious that the Southold Town building department has condemned it as unsafe for occupancy, according to police.
Mattituck Fire Department Chief Samuel Bail Jr. said about 30 members of his department responded to the crash.
"We had to extricate the [woman], take the doors and roof off [the car] to remove the victim," Bail said.
"Other crews were also handling shoring up the house," he said. "The damage was extensive to both the house and the vehicle."
Warren was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center. Her condition was unknown Sunday.
Angela Monsell, Utter's neighbor, said it was upsetting that such an accident happened on the residential street where she has lived since 1954.
Monsell said she believed Utter was staying with a friend.
