A 10-year-old Medford girl was hospitalized Friday night after she fell off a bicycle and impaled her right thigh on a brake handle -- narrowly missing a major artery, Suffolk police said.

Police said the accident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. on Willow Court. Fifth Precinct officers, Emergency Service officers and the Medford Fire Department responded.

The girl was taken by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, with the metal brake handle still in her leg, police said.

Police said her injuries were not life-threatening, and she is listed in stable condition.
