A mother and child were injured in an accident in Smithtown Tuesday morning involving two vehicles, police said.

Suffolk County's Aviation Unit responded to the accident scene and Route 111 was closed for several hours at Mount Pleasant Road after the two vehicles -- a sport utility vehicle and a truck -- collided at about 9:34 a.m., a police spokeswoman said.

The mother, who was not identified, suffered multiple fractures, and the child had nonlife-threatening internal injuries, police said.

There was no apparent alcohol or drug involvement, police said.

The road reopened just before 2 p.m., according to an alert from the state Department of Transportation.
