The mother of two young boys was arrested Friday, accused of leaving her children in a locked car in a Commack parking lot on a day of extreme heat, Suffolk police said.

Maria Luongo-Devivo, 49, of 14 Meadow Rue Lane, East Northport, was charged with two counts of child endangerment.

When officers arrived at the parking lot, the boys, 5 and 1, had flushed faces, and were both sweating profusely, police said. They were checked at the scene for health issues, police said. The two were then given to the care of a neighbor, and Child Protective Services was notified, police said.

A Good Samaritan saw the children in the car in the Meat Farms parking lot, 134 Commack Rd. at 2:59 p.m., police said, and authorities were notified.

By the time officers arrived, the mother, who had been gone about six minutes, had returned to the car, police said.

The National Weather Service said the high temperatures on Long Island was 89.
