A Shirley mother was arrested Thursday as she sat in a car in Holbrook preparing to inject herself with heroin while her two-month-old son was in the car, police said. Another woman with her was also arrested.

The mother, Crystal Webberly, 29, of 42 Lafayette Dr., was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Jacqueline Dattilo, 26, of the same address, was arrested on the same charges, and also loitering.

Three Suffolk Gang Unit officers were in the parking lot of Toys R Us on Sunrise Highway about 1:20 p.m. when they saw a woman in a parked 2004 Hyundai tie a strap around her left arm, police said.

When they went up to the car, police said, the officers saw that Webberly was about to inject herself with heroin and stopped her. Dattilo and Webberly's infant were also in the car, police said.

Both women were to be held overnight for arraignment in First District Court, West Islip.

The child was put in the custody of his grandmother and Child Protective Services was notified, police said.
