A Southampton musician was assaulted by a homeless man outside a Bayport tavern early Sunday morning, Suffolk County police said.
At about 3:45 a.m., Michael "Mick" Hargreaves was leaving Grey Horse Tavern, 291 Bayport Ave., where he had just performed, when Jalaluddin Khojandi, 25, assaulted him with a crowbar, officials said.
Hargreaves, 39, was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue where he was admitted with serious head injuries, police said. On his website, Hargreaves describes himself as a roots rock, blues and folk-style singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer.
Khojandi, who police said is homeless, left the scene after the assault in a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria. A description of the car was later broadcast and police officers on patrol noticed the Ford parked in front of Khojandi's job in Huntington Station at about 4 p.m. Sunday.
As officers were impounding the Ford, they spotted Khojandi driving by in another car, officials said. He was then pulled over and arrested.
Grey Horse Tavern closed at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, said a woman who identified herself as Linda and as the establishment's owner.
"I have no idea what happened," she said. "I can't believe it. We had all left. I hope he's OK."
Khojandi, charged with first degree assault, was being held overnight. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Monday.
