A Brentwood School District elementary school briefly went on lock-out status Friday after a 911 call to Suffolk County police reported gunshots being fired in the area.

A a district spokesman said Hemlock Park Elementary School was removed from lock-out status at 1:30 p.m. after police said responding officers found no evidence of gunfire.

The school, on Hemlock Drive in Bay Shore, serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. It was placed on lock-out after the call to police at 12:15 p.m., spokesman Felix Adeyeye said.

A police spokeswoman said the caller reported shots fired not far from the school.

But police said a search for a shooter or shooters -- and, for any evidence of shots being fired -- came up empty.

Adeyeye said there was no reason to believe students were at risk during the situation and said the lock-out measure was precautionary.

Lock-out status means no one can enter or leave the building, Adeyeye said, adding: "This was a community issue and not a district issue."
