Cops: Parents had heroin in vehicle with infant

A couple was charged with endangering the welfare of their 5-month-old son Tuesday, after they were found with heroin and the child in their vehicle, Suffolk County police said.

Police, responding to a separate complaint of drug activity, noticed the driver committing numerous traffic infractions on Expressway Drive North in Ronkonkoma.

Shortly after 1:25 p.m., officers approached the vehicle, smelling a strong odor of marijuana. Nicholas Hernandez, 21, of Islip admitted to smoking the marijuana, police said.

Further investigation revealed that the parents were in possession of a large quantity of heroin and their 5-month-old son was in the car, police said.

Hernandez was charged with third and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, endangering the welfare of a child, and two counts of criminal contempt for violating an order of protection, police said.

The mother, whose name is being withheld because, police said, she is a victim of domestic violence, was charged with third and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree criminal impersonation and numerous traffic violations.

Suffolk County Child Protective Services was notified and the infant was released to family members.
