Cops: Passenger badly hurt in DWI crash
A driver was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated Tuesday after a two-car crash in North Babylon left his passenger seriously injured, police said.
Robert Berte, 50, of Lana Court, North Babylon, was to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court, Central Islip.
Dori Gonzalez, 39, of Jefferson Avenue, West Islip, the passenger in Berte's car, was admitted for treatment at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.
Berte, driving a 1993 Buick Century north on Route 231, attempted to make a left turn across the southbound lanes near Woods Road about 5:15 p.m., Suffolk police said.
As he was turning, Berte's car was struck by a southbound 1995 BMW driven by Chris Karayannis, 24, of Islip, police said.
Berte, Karayannis, and a passenger in the BMW were not injured, police said.
