A Peconic man was arrested on charges of breaking into a container that held money at a roadside firewood stand, Southold police said.

At about 12:30 a.m. Friday, the owner of the stand on Route 48 in Peconic said he observed a man in a pickup prying open a box used to keep money.

The stand owner confronted the man, who dropped the money and drove off in his pickup, police said.

Using information supplied by the stand owner, police arrested James F. McGreevy, 39, of Soundview Avenue, and charged him with petty larceny, criminal mischief and possession of burglar's tools, police said.

McGreevy was being held for arraignment, police said.
