A 66-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured in Ronkonkoma Wednesday when he was struck by a motorist who was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

Philip Chase, 37, of 346 Avenue B, was driving a 1992 Dodge van on Avenue B, near Fourth Street, when his vehicle hit the man from St. James who was crossing the road at 1:10 p.m., Suffolk police said.

The injured man was given first aid at the scene, including CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) by Sixth Precinct Patrol Officer Simone Ross. He was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he was listed in extremely critical condition, police said.

Police said Chase had an active arrest warrant on another charge. In addition to drunken driving, he was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Thursday.

Detectives ask anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652 or to call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 800-220-TIPS.
