An attempted bank robbery in East Farmingdale was thwarted early Friday when debris from a hole being cut in the building's roof set off alarms, Suffolk County police said.

The incident occurred at the First National Bank of Long Island on Allen Boulevard just after 2:30 a.m., police said.

It was not clear how many suspects were being sought.

Police said the break-in attempt was in an area housing ATMs and that the incident remains under investigation.
