Police are investigating the sexual assault of a 38-year-old woman in a wooded area in Southampton.

The woman was walking east along County Road 39 about 4:30 p.m. Sunday when she was grabbed and dragged into the woods near the Elks Lodge, Southampton Town police said in a Tuesday news release.

After the attack, she was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for evaluation, police said.

Various police special units, including Riverhead K-9, and Suffolk Aviation searched the area but were unable to locate the attacker, police said.

Southampton detectives asked that anyone with information contact them at 631-702-2230.
