Cops: Rain, clothing factors in accident
Bad weather and dark clothing played roles in a Flanders accident that seriously injured a Riverhead man walking in the road Sunday night, Southampton Town police said Tuesday.
Police said Jacqueline Lamb, 63, of Southampton, was driving a 2003 Ford Taurus on Flanders Road at 9:14 p.m. Sunday when she hit Edgar Ganido-Suinin Velasquez, 31, who was walking in the northbound travel lane near Evergreen Road.
Police said Lamb told investigators she didn't see Velasquez until she struck him. Police said their investigation determined rain and dark clothing contributed to the crash. It was unclear why Velasquez was in the road.
Three children in Lamb's car, ages 2, 7 and 12, were not injured.
Volunteers from the Flanders Fire Department, as well as Flanders Ambulance, responded to the scene and took Velasquez to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, police said. Police said they had no additional information on his condition Tuesday.
No one has been charged in the accident.
