Cops: Raymond Peruggi, Corey Smith charged with stealing fire chief's SUV

Two men arrested after leading police on a chase and then crashing the East Moriches fire chief's vehicle they had stolen were arraigned Monday, police said.
Raymond Peruggi and Corey Smith, both 23 and of Center Moriches, each were charged with third-degree grand larceny after their arrests Sunday, Suffolk County police said. Online court records showed Peruggi was also charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, a misdemeanor, and 56 counts of driving violations, from failure to stay in lane to running red lights.
Police said the vehicle, a marked red 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe belonging to fire Chief Bryan Kelly, was parked in front of the Center Moriches firehouse, the keys inside, when it was taken at 1:15 a.m.
Police said a 911 caller reported seeing the vehicle on Route 25A in Rocky Point at 7:20 a.m.
Police said officers followed the SUV east to Southampton before it slid off the road near a parking lot on Montauk Highway and North Bay Avenue and hit a snowbank.
