Cops: Riverhead man arrested in slashing
A Riverhead man was arrested Thursday after he harassed three men -- slashing the face of one of the three with a knife, police said.
Anthony Wayne Smith, 56, was charged with first-degree assault, third-degree and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief, two counts of harassment and one count of obstructing governmental administration after his arrest by Riverhead Town police outside a Railroad Avenue market at 7:48 p.m.
Arraignment details were not immediately available.
Police said one of the victims, Daniel Pansan-Pirri, 32, of Riverhead, was taken by Riverhead Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where he was treated for facial lacerations. He was treated and later released.
Police said officers responding to a disturbance call at Mae's Market found Pansan-Pirri bleeding from the face.
He told officers he had been cut by a knife-wielding man who was still at the scene -- and identified Smith as the suspect. An investigation determined Smith had also harassed two other men.
During processing, police said, Smith damaged a set of handcuffs and a computer keyboard being used by an officer, leading to the obstruction charge against him.
