Cops: Robber struck, killed by car on Vets Highway
A pedestrian who had just robbed someone at gunpoint was struck by a car and killed Saturday evening in Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County police said.
Fifteen minutes before the accident, the robber had stolen cash at gunpoint from a person inside a nearby hotel, police said.
At 6 p.m., police said, the robber was walking on Veterans Memorial Highway near Lakeland Avenue when an eastbound 2004 Nissan Altima hit him.
Cops found the stolen cash and "parts of the gun" at the crash scene, they said in a news release.
The driver, 63, was not charged, a police spokesman said.
Police said they would not release the name of the robber until they tell his next of kin he's dead.
They also did not immediately reveal how they connected the robber to the crime, where the robbery happened, how much cash he stole or why the gun was in pieces.
