A sanitation worker who was struck by a car in Shirley early Wednesday suffered serious injuries, Suffolk County police said.

The victim, 49, of Bay Shore, was on Allanwood Drive, working off the truck, when he was hit about 8:51 a.m., police said.

He was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in Patchogue, but a police spokeswoman did not have more information on the man's condition.

Seventh Squad detectives are investigating the crash, and the spokeswoman said it appears to be noncriminal in nature.

The driver who hit the worker is a 38-year-old Hauppauge man. His car was impounded for a safety check, police said.
