Cops save woman threatening to jump off roof
A woman who threatened to jump from the roof of a Huntington Station home Thursday was grabbed by two officers and pulled to safety, police said.
The 18-year-old woman, who was not physically injured, was transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center for psychiatric evaluation, police said.
Second Precinct Lt. Joseph Gibbons said officers responded to a call about 6 p.m. about a woman who was on the roof of a two-story home on East 4th Street near Fairground Avenue, threatening to jump. "When the officers got there, she was sitting on the edge" about 30 feet above the ground, Gibbons said.
One officer remained outside on the ground trying to distract her with conversation, while four others entered the house and forced their way into a room near the roof section where she sat with her legs dangling over the edge, police said.
Officers Charles Messina and Michael Tilley reached through a window and each were able to grab one of her arms, police said. "She was resisting their efforts," Gibbons said, but aided by the other officers, they were able to pull her back inside.
"She's OK. No officers were hurt," Gibbons said. "A very good job by the guys."
