Cops say man drove on drugs, resisted arrest
A Deer Park man who sped off from police Tuesday on the Southern State Parkway before crashing his car into a residential fence in Islip Terrace faces charges of impaired driving, resisting arrest and drug possession, and his passenger also faces charges, State Police said.
Magloire J. Manigat, 24, was driving a 2005 Lexus east on the parkway near Exit 42, Fifth Avenue, in Brentwood, at about 9:20 p.m. when police said his car was "failing to stay in its lane," according to a release.
A trooper in a marked car attempted to stop the Lexus, but Manigat accelerated away, police said. The trooper pursued Manigat to Exit 44, Sunrise Highway, the release said. Manigat then turned north on Park Place, where he lost control and hit a fence on Islip Boulevard. After hitting the fence, Manigat and his passenger, Troy P. Farris Jr., also of Deer Park, tried to run away, police said.
Troopers caught both men after a brief chase on foot, the release said.
After being transported to the Brentwood barracks, Manigat was found to have been driving under the influence of drugs, police said. He is charged with driving while impaired by drugs, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, unlawful fleeing, possession of marijuana, criminal trespass and several traffic violations, police said.
Farris is charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespass and resisting arrest, police said.
Police did not release an age for Farris.
Both men were scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Central Islip.
