Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who they said knocked down a utility pole in a crash Wednesday morning in North Great River, then fled the scene on foot.

The accident occurred at 4:26 a.m. on Connetquot Avenue at Floral Park Street.

Suffolk County police said a responding officer suffered minor injuries when that officer's patrol unit crashed into the downed utility pole. The officer, whose identity was not released, was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with minor injuries.

Police said officers and a canine unit were still searching for the driver at 6:45 a.m.
