He used a stolen credit card to buy nearly $2,000 worth of merchandise at a Target store, then attempted to purchase nearly $1,000 worth of items at another Target -- only to have the transaction denied, police said. He also made what police called "an unauthorized purchase" at a Best Buy store.

The incidents happened in early October in Setauket and Medford, police said.

In the first incident, on Oct. 7, police said the man charged $1,846 on a stolen credit card at a Target on Pond Path.

Later, he attempted to charge $923 at a Target on Horseblock Road in Medford -- but the deal was denied, police said.

He did make an additional purchase, at a Best Buy in Setauket, using the card, police said.

All told, police said, the man made about $4,400 worth of unauthorized purchases.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incidents to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
