A sport utility vehicle hit a woman chasing her dog into a Setauket street Monday morning, critically injuring her and also injuring her pet, police said.

Suffolk County police said they are investigating the accident on Main Street that injured Peggy Place, 56, of Setauket, who was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.

Her dog, a boxer, was taken to a nearby animal hospital and was treated for a broken leg or pelvis, police said.

The dog got loose from its yard on Main Street at about 6:31 a.m., and as Place went to catch it, both were hit by a Ford Explorer driven by Richard Sayler, 51, of Sound Beach.

Sayler, who was not injured, was driving west on Main Street, near Van Brunt Manor Road. He remained at the scene, and no charges are pending at this time, police said.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call Sixth Squad detectives at 631-854-8652.
