Cops: Sex offender charged with touching
A registered Level 3 sex offender was arrested Friday by Suffolk County police for forcibly touching a 20-year-old woman and failing to register an address change.
Police said Michael Schoefer, 51, was arrested by Special Victims Section detectives at 3:20 a.m. Police said Schoefer had touched the woman in Port Jefferson back in September.
Under state law, police said, Schoefer also was required to register any address change within 10 days - and said Schoefer failed to do so.
Police said the investigation into the failure to register the address change led to the determination that Schoefer had been involved in the September incident.
Police called Schoefer "undomiciled" and said he was known to frequent Northport, Smithtown, Stony Brook, Port Jefferson and Riverhead.
He has been a registered sex offender since 2007 and police said he has "several arrests and convictions" for a variety of charges, including sexual abuse, stalking, forcible touching, criminal mischief, public lewdness and resisting arrest.
Schoefer was charged with forcible touching and failure to register, a felony because of a prior conviction for failure to register. He was scheduled for arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip Friday.
