A Holbrook man tried to steal from a store cash register but was driven off when the business owner brought out a tire iron, Suffolk police said.
Joseph Hogan, 33, fought with the owner of the St. James store over the register but ran off after seeing the tire iron, police said.
When officers arrived, they saw a crowd pointing to a man who matched the suspect's description and arrested him, police said.
Hogan, of 13 Briarlane Walk, was charged with third-degree attempted robbery and second-degree menacing. He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Central Islip.
Detectives ask anyone with information to call them at 631-854-8452 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
