A driver "must have fallen asleep" while driving down a street in West Islip and his car ended up in a lake, police said Friday.

The accident occurred at 6:50 a.m. on Madeline Place.

The driver, whose identity was not released, was not injured, and Suffolk County police said he was not charged. The accident remains under investigation.

Police said the lake, which is just north of Montauk Highway, is about 4 feet deep, and the car ended up partially submerged. The driver managed to climb out of the vehicle on his own, police said.

Police said the car, a 2009 Toyota Corolla, was eastbound on Madeline when the driver apparently dozed off. The lake is at the end of the street.

Police said the driver was awakened when the car brushed a bush, but he could not regain control before the car hit the water.
