Cops: Slow-speed pursuit ends in arrest
It was a slow-speed pursuit -- one, police said, at slower than the posted speed limit.
It ended with spike strips puncturing two tires on the vehicle being pursued and the driver under arrest, charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, police said.
The incident occurred at about 2 a.m. Monday on Route 25 in Coram.
It ended with the arrest of Derrick Dixon, 37, of North Washington Avenue, Centereach, who also was charged with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of the motor vehicle, Suffolk County police said.
Dixon was driving a 1994 Chevrolet Suburban westbound on Route 25 just before 2 a.m. when officers attempted to make a traffic stop near Miller Place Road, police said.
Instead of stopping, police said, Dixon continued driving -- below the speed limit.
Officers finally used spike strips to puncture tires on the Suburban, then arrested Dixon at 2:02 a.m. He is scheduled for arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip.
