Cops: Southampton woman shoots illegal immigrant protesters with pellet gun

A Southampton woman apparently upset with the longtime protesting of two men over illegal immigrants near a village convenience store was arraigned Tuesday on charges of assault and reckless endangerment after shooting them with a pellet gun, Southampton Village police said.

The shooting happened Monday at 11:59 a.m., according to a police report.

Det. Sgt. Herman Lamison said the two men have been protesting near the store on County Road 39 and North Sea Road pretty much "rain or shine" for about the last six years. A few years ago, Lamison said, as many as 250 to 300 day laborers converged on the corner. Now, he said, the corner gets maybe 75 or so day laborers daily.

Police responded to a call of possible shots fired, the report said, and after arriving at the scene they determined the two men were shot by Gail A. Glowczeski, 49, across the street from the 7-Eleven.

Glowczeski, of 350 North Sea Rd., allegedly fired three shots from a pump pellet gun at the protesters, two of which hit them. Police did not specify where the men were hit but said the injuries were "nonlife threatening."

She was held overnight and was released after posting $1,200 bail at Southampton Village Justice Court, police said. She could not immediately be reached for comment.
