Cops: Speeding driver faces drug charges
An East Islip man faces marijuana possession charges after being stopped for speeding Thursday on the Southern State Parkway in Islip, State Police said.
At about 3:40 p.m., troopers stopped the driver of a white Hyundai as he drove 80 mph in a posted 55 mph zone eastbound near Exit 43, Route 111, according to a news release.
While interviewing the driver, Jonathan Krebs, 19, of 30 Sandpiper Lane, troopers said they noticed a strong odor of marijuana.
A search of the car revealed 47 grams of marijuana in a large plastic bag in the trunk and a large glass smoking pipe with marijuana residue, police said.
Krebs was arrested and charged with criminal possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of marijuana and several traffic violations, police said. He is due to appear April 20 in First District Court in Central Islip.
