Eight months after Michael Van Hulse, 29, of Centereach, was struck by a car and killed, police are still searching for the hit-and-run driver -- hoping someone can help them link the vehicle and driver to forensic evidence left at the scene.

The fatal hit-and-run occurred at about 12:45 a.m. on Dec. 21 on Park Street in Centereach. Suffolk County police said detectives believe the vehicle may have been painted metallic red and said damage from the crash likely included a shattered windshield and damage to black plastic panels on the underside of the vehicle.

Police said Van Hulse was walking eastbound on Park, just west of Rustic Road, when he was struck and killed.

A cash reward of up to $5,000 is being offered "for information that leads to an arrest," police said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
