Two brothers involved in a domestic disturbance earned themselves a day in court after one of them tried to rip the badge off the uniform of a Suffolk County police officer who was trying to resolve their dispute Sunday night, police said.

The altercation involving Darren Trojcak, 44, and his brother, John, 50, occurred at 9:44 p.m. at 1100 Udall Rd. in Bay Shore, police said.

Police Officer James Houser of the Third Precinct arrived at the home, which belongs to Darren Trojcak, to try to calm the situation when Trojcak "became belligerent" and attempted to rip the badge from the officer's uniform, Suffolk police said.

A struggle ensued, police said, during which time John Trojcak also became involved in the altercation - attempting to keep his brother from being arrested, police said.

Additional officers were called to the scene.

Both brothers were arrested, police said.

Darren Trojcak was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and third-degree attempted robbery - for trying to steal the badge of the officer, police said. John Trojcak was charged with harassment, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.

Police said John Trojcak was held for arraignment Monday in First District Court in Central Islip. Darren Trojcak was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of undisclosed injuries sustained in the altercation with police.

He is scheduled to be arraigned at a later date.

The cause of the original dispute between the brothers was not immediately clear.
