People were injured when a sport-utility vehicle crashed into a pizza restaurant in Riverhead on Friday afternoon, police said.

Riverhead police said the accident occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. at the Pizza Hut located at 999 Old Country Road. The SUV struck a side entrance to the restaurant.

A wall and beams inside the building were damaged, according to a witness who asked not to be identified.

Police said injured people were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center. Further details were not immediately available.

The restaurant remained open Friday night.
