Cops: Girl, 8, hospitalized after SUV fire in Mastic

An 8-year-old girl was hospitalized Friday after the SUV she was riding in caught fire in Mastic, Suffolk County police said.
A 28-year-old woman was driving the 2003 Chevy Tahoe on Mastic Boulevard near Madison Street when a fire started in the back of the vehicle, where the girl was sitting, about 3:20 p.m., a police spokeswoman said.
The girl was pulled from the vehicle with minor burns and taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in Patchogue.
The woman and a 12-year-old boy who had been sitting in the front seat were uninjured. None of the victims were identified by name.
Photos from the scene show a crumpled and blackened back seat in the SUV and Mastic firefighters pulling a large, charred speaker system from the vehicle’s rear.
Suffolk police’s arson squad and fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze, the spokeswoman said.
