Cops: SUV hits 3 kids in Huntington Station

Three children were injured, one seriously, in a Saturday afternoon crash in Huntington Station, Suffolk County police said.

Police said Ralph Williams, 49, was driving on Academy Place in a 2003 Chevy TrailBlazer at 2:42 p.m. and, while attempting to make a left turn onto New York Avenue, he struck the three children who were in a crosswalk, going from the west to the east side of the street with their mother. Police could not say whether the family had the walk signal.

A 3-year-old girl suffered a finger laceration, an 11-year-old girl suffered a minor head injury and a 6-year-old boy suffered a serious head injury, police said. All three were taken to Huntington Hospital by Huntington Community Rescue, police said. The 6-year-old is scheduled to be transferred to Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park.

Their mother, Dorothy Blue, 35, of Medford, and a fourth child, who police said is the twin of the 3-year-old, were not injured. Williams, of Westbury, also was not hurt.

A police spokesman said the incident appears noncriminal, but the investigation continues.
