An 18-year-old male from Shirley faces misdemeanor charges after harboring a 14-year female in his Westchester County college dorm after she ran away from her Mattituck home, police said.

Charles Matthews, 18, was arrested Tuesday and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, and obstruction governmental administration for initially telling police he did not know the girl's whereabouts, Chief Martin Flatley of the Southold Town Police Department said Wednesday.

"He [Matthews] cooperated fully after his arrest and we have no reason to think anything took place between them that would constitute a penal law charge," Flatley said.

He said the girl's family had recently moved to Mattituck from the Shirley-Mastic area.

The chief said Matthews was released Tuesday after posting $250 cash bail and is due back in town court on April 26.

The girl's family reported her missing Monday morning after she left her home some time during the night, Flatley said. The chief said the girl left a note "causing the family and the police concern over her safety."
