Cops: Teen drivers charged after street race
Two teenaged drivers, one with just a junior operator’s license, could have their cars seized after being arrested for participating in an illegal street race at speeds up to 100 mph Tuesday night on Express Drive North in Medford, Suffolk County police said.
JeanCarlos Clas, 18, of Little Treasure Drive, Medford, and Ronnie Vincenty, 17, of Layton Lane, Centereach, were both charged with participating in an illegal speed contest and received summonses for speeding. Vincenty also was issued a summons for violating the terms of his junior license.
Police said a Sixth Precinct Crime Section officer in an unmarked car saw the cars driven by the two teens stopped for a light near Route 112 at 10:49 p.m. — and then saw them start to race when the light turned green. Police could not immediately identify what kind of cars were involved, but said the two reached speeds of up to 100 mph before being stopped.
The cars were impounded and police said the county will move to seize the vehicle under Suffolk law.
The drivers were both released on station house bail and are scheduled for arraignment in First District Court in Central Islip on Aug. 31.
