Cops: Teen pointed laser at marine officer

A Sayville teenager was arrested early Tuesday after he pointed a green laser light at a Marine Bureau officer driving a boat in the Great South Bay, police said.

Erik Barry, 18, of 200 Palmer Circle, was taken to the Fifth Precinct, posted bail and is to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip at a future date on a charge of second-degree reckless endangerment, police said.

The incident occurred just before midnight Monday as the crew of Marine Kilo was on routine patrol in the bay, Suffolk County police said.

Officer Robert Daniels, who was operating the vessel, experienced "blurred vision" and "saw spots in front of his eyes" as a result of being exposed to the laser light, which "hindered his ability to continue to operate the vessel," police said.

The boat crew, including officers Daniel Smith, Ryan Doherty and Daniels, tracked the source of the light to the house where Barry lives, locating the laser there, police said.

Barry was arrested at 12:40 a.m., less than an hour after the incident, police said.

Daniels was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. He was later released.
