A motor boat flew off its trailer and hit a guardrail and a signpost after the driver towing it lost control of his vehicle on the Long Island Expressway Sunday morning, authorities said.
The boat was being towed at about 8:15 a.m. west on the expressway when the driver suddenly lost control and hit a guardrail, Melville Fire Chief Robert Warren said.
The Suffolk County sheriff's office said the incident occurred just east of exit 49.
The impact caused the roughly 28-foot boat to fly off the trailer and hit a metal stanchion, where the boat broke apart, Warren said.
"The boat was totally destroyed," he said.
Firefighters contained the leaking gasoline and antifreeze from the boat. No injuries were reported.
