A truck driver transporting Sandy damaged vehicles to Detroit was stopped on the LIE in Islandia Thursday and charged with illegal possession of a handgun, police said.

Freddie Foggie Jr., 40, of Boiling Springs, S.C., was also charged with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, Suffolk police said.

Foggie was driving a truck with a trailer that contained three cars picked up in Calverton, police said, when he was stopped by an officer for a safety inspection at 5:50 p.m. at the Park and Ride lot near exit 58.

During the inspection, the officer, Robert Copozzi, noticed a loaded 9 mm handgun, police said. In addition to the arrest, Foggie was issued nine tickets for multiple vehicle safety violations relating to the truck, owned by JK Trucking and Auto Sales in Mississippi.

Foggie was to be arraigned Friday in First District Court, Central Islip.
