The body of an unidentified man discovered Monday in Long Island Sound about five miles north of Port Jefferson had no obvious signs of trauma and no obvious cause of death but police still have not been able to determine how he got into the water - or where, exactly, he came from, police said.

A Suffolk County police investigator told Newsday there is no missing persons case on Long Island that can immediately be tied to the discovery.

Police investigators are attempting to determine if the man disappeared from another locale - possibly Connecticut.

A pleasure boater in a sailboat discovered the body and notified the Suffolk marine bureau at about 3 p.m., police said.

Police said the Fairfield, Conn., police received a call of a body in the water on Sunday at about 5 p.m., but a search of the Sound by emergency responders there found nothing.

There are no missing persons cases in the Fairfield area, either, Suffolk police said.

Detectives are awaiting a medical examiner's report for a determination as to the cause of death. The body, which police don't believe was in the water a long of time, was described by police as a dark-skinned black man, 5 feet, 9 inches tall, 160 pounds, with thick black hair, a mustache and beard. There was no clothing on the body, police said.

Law enforcement authorities believe currents could have carried the body from waters anywhere in the region.
