Two Montauk men were critically injured Sunday when police said their all-terrain vehicles crashed head-on.

The accident occurred at 3:57 p.m. on a dirt road between North Shore Road and the East Hampton Town landfill in Montauk, East Hampton Town police said Monday in a news release.

The injured were identified by as Henry O. Sjoman, 24, and John R. Veitch, 31.

Police said both were treated at the scene by Montauk Fire Department emergency medical technicians and then airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.

Both men were wearing helmets when their ATVs collided head-on, police said. Police did not indicate the speed of the vehicles at the time and did not provide details of the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.
