Cops: Two rescued from burning Coram home

Police officers rescued two people from a burning home in Coram on Thursday afternoon, Suffolk police said.

Sixth Precinct officers Sean McAuliffe, Michael Mortilla and Robert Spadaccini arrived at 142 W. Yaphank Rd. at 3:07 p.m. to find Jamel Shands and Chanell Duncan hanging out the home's second-floor windows, unable to escape because of fire and heavy smoke inside.

"Smoke was billowing out the windows," McAuliffe, 34, said. "We held our breath, ran upstairs and found the door."

Mortilla helped Shands, who had difficulty walking, downstairs, McAuliffe said.

Shands, 36, and Duncan, 34, were not hurt. Patricia Barrett, 55, who was on the first floor of the residence, was able to escape on her own.

The Coram Fire Department responded and determined the fire was started in the kitchen, and spread to an interior wall behind the stove. It was not considered suspicious.
