Cops: Two stopped in Water Mill, had 10 pounds of pot in car

Two men were arrested in Water Mill after Southampton Town police said they found more than 10 pounds of freshly harvested marijuana in their vehicle during a traffic stop.

Daniel Dost, 38, of Centereach, was driving with his passenger, William Whelan, 43, of Lake Grove, when police stopped their vehicle shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday on a traffic violation.

After noting a strong smell of marijuana coming from the car, officers found two large garbage bags containing the drug, police said. Both men were arrested and taken to police headquarters, and the vehicle was impounded, police said.

Dost and Whelan were charged with second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, unlawfully growing marijuana and unlawful possession of marijuana. Dost also was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and several traffic violations.

At their arraignments Sunday, Dost was ordered held on $8,100 bail, while Whelan was ordered held on $10,100 bail, police said.
