Cops use antidote to save teen who overdosed

Using an intranasal antidote, Seventh Precinct officers revived a teen who had overdosed on drugs Friday in East Moriches, Suffolk County police said.

Responding to a 1:30 p.m. call, officers went to a Benjamin Avenue home where they found an 18-year-old male who was unconscious, police said. Using intranasal Narcan, Officer Caroline Ervolina, assisted by others, revived the victim, who was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center, Riverhead, by the East Moriches Community Ambulance, police said.

The Fourth, Sixth and Seventh Police Precincts and Marine Bureau are participating in a New York State Department of Health pilot program that aims to put the drug-overdose antidote in the hands of thousands of Suffolk County EMTs, saving 23 lives in its first 10 weeks, a county official said last month.

As of mid-September, 21 ambulance service companies were also participating in the program.
