Cops use drug overdose antidote to revive woman

A Bayport woman who was showing signs of a heroin overdose Sunday was taken by a friend to the Sixth Precinct, where she became the latest person to be revived by officers who started carrying a drug overdose antidote under a pilot program, Suffolk police said Tuesday.

The woman, 25, was with the friend about 12:45 a.m. at Walgreen's on Middle Country Road in Selden, not far from the Sixth Precinct, which is also on Middle Country Road in Selden, police said.

At the precinct, Officer Michael Schneider gave the woman intranasal Narcan, police said, and after the antidote counteracted the effects of heroin, the woman was taken by Selden Rescue to Stony Brook University Hospital.

Narcan is being carried by some officers in the Fourth, Sixth and Seventh precincts and the marine bureau under a pilot program approved this year by the Suffolk Legislature. In July, the department began training officers in the use of Narcan, or naloxone, which knocks opiate molecules from the brain stem's nerve receptors.

More than 20 volunteer emergency responders in fire and ambulance agencies are also conducting their own training.
