Cops: Van driver ejected in LIE crash, breaks leg
A van driver escaped serious injury despite being ejected in a crash on the Long Island Expressway in Melville. The unidentified male driver "apparently lost control of the vehicle and struck a wall" when he was ejected, according to a Suffolk County police spokeswoman. Police closed the eastbound lanes for about 20 minutes so the driver could be airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries including a broken leg. A van driver escaped serious injury despite being ejected in a crash Monday afternoon on the Long Island Expressway in Melville, police said.
The unidentified male driver "apparently lost control of the vehicle and struck a wall" when he was ejected, a Suffolk County police spokeswoman said.
The driver was taken by Suffolk County police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries including a broken leg, the spokeswoman said.
Police closed the eastbound lanes for about 20 minutes so the driver could be airlifted to the hospital, she said. Traffic had been diverted at Exit 49, west of the accident scene.
